Waste Management Plant

The County Government of Uasin Gishu has continued its partnership with Norrkoping Municipality from Sweden, which started back in 2014 in a bid to develop a waste management plant, a project that is in its final stages.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Office of the speaker, County Assembly of Uasin Gishu, the delegation from Norrkoping Municipality led by Ms Sara Meyer, CEO international relations, noted that they were keen to maintain their partnership with the County Government of Uasin Gishu in order to improve the livelihoods of her residents as far as waste management is concerned.

The Department of Environment, Water, Tourism and Wildlife Management is expected to purchase compactors and other machinery to boost garbage collection and management of the dumpsite.

The County Government of Uasin gishu is among the first Counties to strike a partnership with the Swedish Government on waste management. Sweden is known globally as experts in modern waste management.

The plant will be a big boost for the County which seeks possible ways of solving increasing volumes of waste in dump sites.

The CEC in charge of Environment, Water, Tourism and Wildlife Management Mrs. Mary Njogu noted that plans are underway to transfer the collection and management of waste to ELDOWAS and further added that the move will ensure that waste management is heightened.

“The development of a waste management plant will create employment for the people of Uasin Gishu and also help in keeping the environment clean,” added Njogu.

It is estimated that Uasin Gishu County produces up to 200 tons of both organic and inorganic waste per day.

Speaking during the visit, the Chief Officer in charge of Environment, Water, Tourism and Wildlife Management Mr. Simon Kemei echoed the CECs remarks and noted that the partnership will go a long way in ensuring that waste crisis is a thing of the past.

The County Government of Uasin Gishu is expected to do an intensive four months campaign from January to April 2019 to sensitize the residents on the importance of keeping the environment clean.
