The Department of Cooperatives and Enterprise Development today joined the world in Celebrating the 98th Edition of World Cooperatives Day by Planting trees at Eldoret rescue centre.
Uasin Gishu Governor HE Jackson Mandago who was the Chief Guest at the event said Ushirika day is celebrated to highlight the success brought about by Cooperatives societies.
He urged cooperatives societies that have defaulted in paying their loans to pay them so that the monies can be re-injected back to the sector
On his part Deputy Governor H.E Daniel Chemno urged members of the society to diversify, noting that the County Government of Uasin Gishu recently invested heavily in promotional crops seedlings which were distributed to farmers most them being members of cooperative societies.
Uasin Gishu County Assembly Cooperatives Committee Chair Hon Edwin Maraswo promised the department of his support to have the sector revived.
County Executive Member for cooperatives Ms Esther Mutai said that the department has instituted free bookkeeping service and training of committee societies on governance and leadership.
“This Financial Year alone we have been able to support 66 cooperatives in bookkeeping which has raised the audited books per year from 109 to 200.” She added.
