UASIN GISHU FETED AS THE HUB OF COOPERATIVE MOVEMENT IN NORTH RIFT

The County Government of Uasin Gishu has been lauded for the exemplary performance in the support and expansion of the co-operative movement in the country, with the Governor’s personal effort in promoting SACCO membership in Uasin Gishu taking prominence.

As he officially opened the 5th annual SACCOS leaders convention, Uasin Gishu Governor H.E Hon Jackson K. Mandago, EGH reiterated the need for SACCOS and co-operative societies to adopt the use of modern technology to attract the young people to join the movement.

The event, themed “SACCO’s, disrupt or be disrupted” is organized by Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Cooperative Ltd (KUSCCO) as a platform for the SACCO leaders to exchange ideas on better ways of managing the sector that so far accounts for savings of over Ksh 720 Billion.

Mandago noted that it is only through the cooperative movement that the Government has taken money circulation to the lowest level of our community. Small scale farmers and traders have accessed cheap loans and market their products through cooperative societies.

We must embrace technology and be careful that we deploy the best technology that will not attract loses or prone to cyberattacks, we should use technology to bring the generation on board as members. The cooperative has a capacity and ability to be a vehicle of wealth distribution ” said Governor.

Other speakers including KUSCO Group Managing Director George Ototo, George Magutu (KUSCO National Chair) and Geoffrey Jang’ombe AG Commissioner Co-operative Development hailed Uasin Gishu’s governance and upgrading cooperative docket as a whole department with a CECM.

The convention brings together delegates (SACCO/co-operative leaders) from all over the country with CECM for co-operative and Enterprise Development Esther Mutai leading the Uasin Gishu delegation. The department has so far extended loans worth Ksh 400 million to 135 SACCOS and co-operative societies.

The 5-day annual event is an avenue for brainstorming and stock-taking of the success and challenges faced by ‘cooperators’. Uasin Gishu Governor used the opportunity as this year’s chief guest to call on members to bring that all-important 6th convention to Eldoret next year. This year’s event is held in Mombasa.
