President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on county governments to support farmers even as cotton production resumes following revitalization of Rivatex East Africa Limited.
President Kenyatta, his deputy Dr. William Ruto and host Governor Jackson Mandago as well as several other leaders and government officials, commissioned the refurbished modern facility on Friday.
Speaking during the launch, the head of state said: “…today I call upon all county governments to work and support our farmers in bringing back growing of cotton, which is a crucial raw material for this factory.”
The President’s calling coming just about a fortnight ago after Governor Mandago led a team of investors into deliberations into a new kind of farming; rearing of silkworms.
Deputy head of state, Dr. Ruto said: “The President has a big foresight in the establishment and maintaining the movement of industrialization as among the key agendas.”
“Besides job opportunities in factory and farming of cotton, we can say the big four agendas are well thought of.”
“The component of manufacturing is made a reality when we see the modern machinery installed in this facility.”
Governor Mandago said revamping the factory will not only provide employment opportunities but will also work to ensure that farmers appreciate calls for diversity in farming.”
“The factory will employ over 4000 thus solving the issue of unemployment,” furthers Mandago.
He adds: “The laptops assembling project also has employed hundreds of youth. It is our request that you give a directive that schools and government offices purchase locally assembled laptops because it will further create jobs for our youth.”
Senator Prof. Margaret Kamar called for increased allocation for higher institutions of higher learning. Bio-Technology cotton is a new variety that was discovered through research. Its yield is better than that of conventional variety.
Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi said: “This factory will most importantly benefit the people of Kapseret Constituency, the area hosting the firm.”
Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos and his senator, Kipchumba Murkomen, Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno were among leaders who were present at the launch.
