Officials from the Department of Water, Environment, Natural Resources, Tourism and Wildlife Management on Monday visited the Old Uganda Road Enterprises together with officials from Municipality of Norrköping.
The team which was led by CECM for the department Ms. Mary Njogu, Chief Officer Mr. Simeon Kemei and the Director Mr. Joseph Chelulei took the officials on a field excursion to the Old Uganda Road offices and later to their workshop where they do Art designs by recycling old materials.
The Enterprise is doing garbage collection from Mwanzo Estate to upper Roadblock Estates, make liquid soap, offer mentorship programs to the youth on their role in keeping the environment clean and training them on how to do recycling.
Their motto ” Mazingira safe, Jukumu letu” is aimed at creating awareness to the society on our responsibility to keep the environment clean.
“Garbage collection is transforming the livelihoods of our members. We regard it as a business and not an eyesore as others may deem it” said the chairman of the enterprise.
In the evening, the team had a meeting with the Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company Limited, (ELDOWAS) where they strategized on how to do a seamless transition for the solid waste project from the County to ELDOWAS.
“We are looking at a scaled down form of transition which will ensure that all our stakeholders are comfortable. We will identify a viable zone out of the 5 zones we have and do a pilot program” Added Jimmy Kemboi on behalf of ELDOWAS team.
Norrkoping Municipality Officials shared their expertise with the working group on how best to do the transition.
The County Government of Uasin Gishu is partnering with Norrkoping Municipality to improve the management of solid waste in Eldoret town and it’s environs.
