GENEROSITY GAVE THEM A DAM FOR FISH FARMING

Konyit Vision Group in Megun ward was non-existent until 2014 when the County approached the community for murram to be used for road construction.

The community later thought of making a dam out of the area in which the murram was dug out from. They saw an opportunity to exploit fish farming and that's how they formed Konyit group says the group chairperson Mr. Samuel Kitur.

"13 families from the area in which the soil was dug came up together to form the group in 2015 and approached the roads department to construct for them a dam where they had dug with one collective idea; venturing into fish farming. We had an interest in fish farming and the County ensured our dream came true" says Mr. Kitur.

The Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries supplied 4000 fingerlings to the group in May 2016 and have since then harvested severally.
The Directorate of Fisheries has embarked on training the group members on value addition of the fish to increase their income.

"We are training the group members on the importance of deep-frying the fish in highly hygienic environs to increase the market price. Value addition of products costs less but increases the price of the commodity and that's where we want our farmers to reach." Say kesses Sub County Fisheries Officer Mr. Machuka.

The members sell the fish to locals and transport some to the Eldoret Fishmarket. They are able to make good profits with less effort since fish farming is not labour intensive.

The group has held several field days during harvest time and has made huge sales since then. They are currently preparing to host a bigger sales day in 2 weeks time to market their value-added products. ... See MoreSee Less
