The County Government of Uasin Gishu is calling upon the producers, distributors and other horticulture stakeholders in trade to utilize the Eldoret International Airport for export of fresh produce soon its approval succeeds.
Speaking on Monday in a meeting aimed at pushing for approval of the airport for export of produce, Trade and Industrialization County Executive Committee Member Dr Emily Kogos said Uasin Gishu is catching up with other leading counties exporting avocados after successful calls on diversification.
“The calls for diversification were championed by top leadership of the county and we are glad that most of our farmers and as we speak, have fully embraced the calls.” said Dr. Kogos
Kogos noted that time has come to utilize flights that have been landing at the airport and jetting back empty adding that the departments of Trade and Agriculture will carry-out horticulture stakeholders sensitization program to see the airport’s facilities put into use.
The airport is fitted with cold room storage facilities and go downs that are meant to preserve fresh produce before export.
