The County Government of Uasin Gishu Governor H. E Hon Jackson Mandago has called for a multi-agency fight against drug and substance abuse saying that this was a menace that will sweep generations if not dealt with accordingly.
In a speech read on his behalf by The County Executive in charge of Health Mrs. Eveline Rotich during a pre- international day against drug abuse (IDADA), the county boss said that the rate at which the drug and substance was being abused was alarming.
He said that his administration will work round the clock with all state agencies tasked with fighting the nuisance, saying that this was national disaster that requires energy from all responsible citizens of this Country.
Governor Mandago further lamented that morals were slowly being eroded in the society and called for urgent interventions from all responsible bodies, adding that the County Government of Uasin Gishu has continually conducted follow ups for all rehabilitated drug addicts, besides linking them to support groups.
The Governor, who recently sponsored an addict to go through a rehabilitation programme called for stringent measures to be taken against all those who make the drugs and substance available to the vulnerable groups.
On the other hand, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA), through the Board Chair Lt. Col (Rtd) Julius Ayub Githiri commended the County Government of Uasin Gishu for the tireless effort put in fighting the drug and substance abuse.
He said that the number of drinking joints have significantly reduced to less than 1000 in the County as compared to other areas where the number of bars exceeds that of restaurants and schools.
The Retired General said that they will not relent in their quest to have the menace dealt with once and for all.
NACADA CEO Victor Okioma was also present in the event that took place in an Eldoret hotel.
