MANDAGO EXPRESS OPTIMISM KIPCHOGE STADIUM WILL BE READY TO HOST OLYMPICS TRIALS

Governor Jackson Mandago EGH on Tuesday hosted Sports Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohammed who is in Eldoret to inspect ongoing construction works of Kipchoge Keino Stadium.

Speaking during the event, Mandago expressed optimism that the stadium will be ready by May so as to host the trials for Tokyo Olympics Games.

Trials are expected to be held around May this year ahead of the Tokyo games slated for August. Mandago asked the CS to consider bringing them to Eldoret once again.

The Governor however noted that even though the stadium is not yet complete, it has been of great help to many athletes, especially those looking for sports scholarship.

The tartan turf has been in use for athletes doing speed walk and time trials for a scholarship program organized by Deputy Governor, Daniel Chemno.

“More than 50 students have secured athletics scholarship already thanks to this stadium and once complete, the benefits will be enormous,” he said.

Mandago who is also the North Rift Economic Bloc chairman also asked the National Government to hasten construction of other stadiums in the region like Kamariny in Elgeyo Marakwet and Kip Keino Stadium in Nandi County, so as to enable them host an international sports event in future.

“This is a region of athletes who have conquered the world and with the three stadiums, they will have a kingdom they can be proud of,” he said.

Amb. Amina on her part noted that the stadium is currently 45% complete and challenged contractors to ensure it is delivered on time.

She admitted that the project had taken longer than expected but affirmed Government’s commitment to ensuring it is delivered not only on time but at highest possible standards.

“This stadium should have been used by now. We cannot have a project that takes 4-5 years to be completed,” the CS said.

“We are disappointed with the speed of work at Kipchoge Stadium and we hope with this visit, we will have a more realistic timeline,” she added.

Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno, County Executive committee Members (Education) Joseph Kurgat, Eng. Nelson Maritim (Lands) CPA Julius Ruto (Finance) and County Secretary Edwin Bett were in attendance.
