Uasin Gishu County is currently hosting Young leaders from East Africa convened for the 5th bi-annual East Africa Youth Leadership Conference. The event seeks to showcase climate solutions and engage with global leaders on climate-smart agriculture.

The Leadership conference brought together youth climate champions from East African countries and territories to share their solutions on the global stage.

Governor Jonathan Bii, in a speech read by Agriculture Chief Officer Mr Elijah Koech, praised the young people for continuing to take leading role in influencing, advocating, and demanding responsible climate behaviour urging them to continue leading the way and promoting climate-smart agriculture in the East Africa.

Governor Bii said that climate-smart agriculture will sustainably increase agricultural productivity, enhance resilience to climate change, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

To encourage youth to participate in agriculture, my administration has supported 37 youth groups from various wards with solar-powered drip irrigation systems to enable them to undertake crop production throughout the year,” said Governor Bii.

Governor Bii added that he is keen on promoting irrigated agriculture and the use of solar energy, and in this regard, his administration having budgeted to construct ten greenhouses per Ward of which four shall be given to youth in agribusiness.

Further, Bii added that the county government will continue providing training and extension services to farmers to ensure that they adopt climate-smart agriculture practices in addition to creating an enabling policy and regulatory environment that supports its adoption.

He urged the young people to work together to ensure that agriculture remains a viable and sustainable sector in the face of climate change.

Chief Officer for Livestock Mr. Nixon Cheplong was also present.
