The ad hoc committee on Municipality of Eldoret conferment to City status has handed over the final report to The Governor of Usain Gishu H.E Jonathan Bii Chelilim.
In their recommendations, the committee unanimously agreed that it’s fit for Eldoret to be granted a charter after the score on recommendation surpassed 93% on residents’ reports and 100% on provisions requirements in the urban areas and cities act.
“We conducted a public participation where the various stakeholders were engaged on the suitability of our municipality to be a city and our findings came with a 93% approval.” Said Mr Willy Kenei, the chair of the Adhoc Committee.
On his part, Governor Bii commended the ad-hoc committee and the secretariat for the job well done and said he will do his role as required by law and forward the report to the County assembly.
My wish is to see the process hastened and if I had a chance I would have handed over the report to the county assembly today, that’s how urgent I would wish to see us granted the charter. City status will go a long way in expanding our businesses and our status as the City of champions” said H.E Bii.
Deputy Governor Engineer John Barorot congratulated the team of experts that formed the ad-hoc committee terming the work as holistic,” this committee was all-inclusive, from planners, engineer’s to even the business community led by Kenei” said the Deputy Governor.
County speaker Hon. Philip Muigei, assured of the County assembly’s support of the process noting that, Eldoret will be a city for all, especially being the NOREB headquarters.
The Municipality Manager, Mr Tito Koiyet was elated and thankful to the team that saw the process succeed
We have gone around asking for opinions for the elevation of our municipality and almost everyone was in agreement that Eldoret becoming a city was long overdue, I thank the committee for their sacrifices to see to it that we handover the report today,” Koiyet said.
Municipality Board Chair Mr Julius Kitur pointed out the opportunities that come with the elevation.
We are already in the limelight internationally because Eldoret is also a sports hub and has the best climate, with approval of the conferment by the assembly and the senate then the president will confer Eldoret to a city,” said Mr Kitur.
Also present were the County Secretary, County Executive Committee Members, Chief officers, Municipality Board Members, Adhoc Committee Members, Chamber of Commerce and other stakeholders
