The County Government of Uasin Gishu and other key environmental stakeholders on Thursday joined the rest of the world in celebrating World Wetlands Day, themed “Wetlands Restoration”.
World’s Wetlands Day marked on February 2nd, is a global awareness campaign aimed at creating awareness of the value of wetlands. It also marks the Anniversary of the Ramsar Convention on wetlands, adopted as an international treaty in 1971 at Ramsar in Iran to which Kenya is a signatory.
Giving his speech while representing Uasin Gishu Governor, H.E Hon. Jonathan Chelilim, the County Executive Committee Member for Water, Sanitation, Irrigation, Energy, Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Dr. Abraham Serem, highlighted an urgent need for wetland conservation noting that many wetlands are shrinking due to human activities.
He further reiterated Governor Bii’s commitment to championing activities that will promote a healthy and conducive environment for all adding that his department will work closely with all stakeholders in many areas of environmental conservation.
He hinted at plans by his department to develop a wetlands management policy that will help in developing a wetlands restoration plan in partnership with other stakeholders.
Let us put our efforts together to make sure we conserve our environment and reverse the effects of climate change, ” added the County Secretary Mr. Edwin Bett.
Present at the Meeting was Ag Co Water and Environment Stephen Barno, UoE Deputy Vive Chair Prof. Philip Raburu, Director Nema Sally Kibos, WRA Manager David Ruto, Director Environment Dr. Charles Nyabayo, DCC Kesses, Moiben SCA Moses Kangogo, International Crane Foundation, Schools, and other key stakeholders.
