Uasin Gishu County has the potential to produce cash crops worth millions of dollars to meet the ever-rising global demands, Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno said. He spoke on Friday when he visited George Chirichir a model cash crop farmer in Leseru, Kamagut Ward of turbo Sub-county.
Mr Chirchir has a 5-acre parcel of land on which he cultivates an acre of Avocados, Strawberries( 0.1 acres), Gooseberries ( 0. acres), and vegetables ( 0.3 acres). He has also set aside an acre for dairy cows on zero grazings.
I have 40 avocado trees. Each gives me 1,400 fruits two times a year. I make between 0.5 – 0.6 Million shillings on every harvest”, Chirchir said. He also makes an annual average of Kshs 120,000 from Gooseberries and up to Kshs. 70,000 shillings from vegetables.
The County Executive Member for Agriculture Samuel Yego, also present during the visit said that his department is in talks with several horticultural export companies who will enter into contracts with farmers for production of Avocado, Coffee and Macadamia.
