A relief measure for the NOREB potato growing farmers is finally here.
Many years, potato farmers in Uasin Gishu County used to experience lots of challenges in storing their potatoes.
This long suffering menace will come to an end tomorrow Thursday when the governor Uasin Gishu County H.E Jackson Mandago will be officially commissioning the potato storage barn in Ainabkoi Sub-county.
The storage facility which is a pilot project in the entire Africa and a relief for potato growing farmers is capable of storing potatoes for more than six months. The barn carries a unique element that does not use energy or electricity for its preservation, rather, it uses air which is let in overnight and closed in the morning.
According to the County Chief Officer for Trade,Tourism and Industrialisation Mr Simeon Cheplel while speaking at the Deputy Governor’s office and during an interview said plans to establish other cooling systems in all County markets is underway.
On his part, the project manager Mr Remko Kruithof said the storage barn can be used in the preservation of onions, grain, rice and maize.
Mid last year,NOREB executive members in charge of trade convened a meeting in Eldoret town towards the establishment of a potato storage.
The idea and the togetherness of NOREB counties which is chaired by H.E governor Jackson Mandago was aimed at uniting and developing North Rift Counties with a ‘common development agenda’
