Home / Office of the Governor / ELDORET BODABODA ISSUES
I wish to set the records straight in regard to the bodaboda unrest in the city of Eldoret and allay any association with the current political environment/competition.
For the last few days, two factions has been squabbling for control of bodaboda stages at the CBD, therefore causing uneccesary tension and disquiet in some streets.
County government of Uasin Gishu had organised all bodaboda operators in six large saccos, (one in every sub-county) this was meant to streamline their operations in the city and rural areas.
Each sacco was mandated to recruit members from the respective sub-county (both in rural and urban areas), draft their constitution and elect their leaders. This happened and the government handed them a sacco certificate to each.
The two factions are members of the six bodaboda saccos or aspiring to be members, these saccos were created by the county government to bring order and track all the bodaboda riders in the County.
Report indicates that some bodaboda operators in the six sub-counties did not join the saccos. This is because they din’t get the information on time or some din’t know the benefits of being in a sacco.
After sometimes, the bodaboda guys who initially din’t join the saccos, discovered the importance of being in one and decided to inquire from the saccos leadership, they however got some resistance and “tough” rules of entry.
They decided to approach line department at the County government where the matter was being handled. Before an amicable solution had been arrived, the bodaboda operators became impatient and stormed the existing bodaboda stages in town.
On Monday 28th Feb, 2017, some bodaboda operators forcefully flounced the stages that they have been eying before the ongoing process of allocation was complete.
The action provoked retaliation from the existing bodaboda operators at the stages, the scuffle led to destruction of a few motorcycles and some minor injuries. The police and county “Askaris” acted swiftly and calmed the situation pending lasting solution.
The claim that some bodaboda riders were ferried from the rural areas to the city is untrue, these are people who knows each other, they have been operating in the CBD or outskirts of the town together.
This being a political season, I would like to disassociate the bodaboda issue with politics. Although the discussion around the political groupings have been trying to attach the unfortunate incident with the current politics in the country.
I wish to reassure investors, visitors and residents of Uasin Gishu County particularly Eldoret town that all is well and that the issue is being handled by office of the County commissioner and the concerned department at the county government.
It is regrettable that in this time and era, some people still believe in disorganisation and confusion. Investigation into the matter has been launched and those found culpable will be prosecuted.
A meeting between the bodaboda operators, national government and County government officials has been called tomorrow 2nd March, 2017 to settle the matter once and for all.
