The Department of Cooperatives and Enterprise Development is working towards wooing all bodabodas across the county to join SACCOs to benefit more from the government programmes.
Speaking in Moiben Ward, Moiben Sub-County Trade and Industrialization CECM Dr Emily Kogos who was represented by Trade Administrator Brenda Rono said that was the only way the County Government would bring sanity in the sector that has absorbed several youths.
She further disclosed that before the Department of Cooperatives and Enterprise Development was granted a standalone in August 2017, Uasin Gishu County had only one Sacco, the Kibagenge bodaboda Sacco.
This forced the department to undertake mass mobilization of the bodaboda operators to form SACCOs to enable them to run their operations with ease.
Already, 23 SACCOs have been registered in the entire county, out of these, 11 in the CBD and 13 outside the CBD with Mobiramako Sacco being the latest in Moiben ward.
On his part Cooperatives and Enterprise Development Chief Officer Mr Pius Kigen said that they are encouraging all bodaboda operators in the entire county to come together and form SACCOs.
He said that his department will not relent until all the operators join the SACCOs.
The newly launched SACCO has a total of 432 members drawn from Moiben, Kabenes and Garage and were trained on the importance of joining a SACCO.
Saccos enable the operators to initiate small savings which will see them qualify for loans, easy management and coordination among others. .
Area MCA Noah Kemboi, Drucillah Cherogony and Inua Biashara Fund Manager Joan Mutai were present.
