With the current rapid growth of Eldoret town and it’s environs experienced, street naming and building numbering is warranted to provide ease in locating places and facilities within it.
Uasin Gishu County Department of Lands , Housing , Physical planning and Urban Development is currently working on a project to establish a well-planned laid out design to name the major and minor streets, feeder streets and all buildings.
Speaking to consultants carrying out the project , Chief Officer in charge of Physical planning and Urban Development, Mr. Kenneth Mbeka, said that the system would be of great use since it will now become easy to locate persons and buildings within town.
” We are working to establish permanent names for our town. Considerations on the naming is determined by the size of the street and service facilities there in. Hence, the bigger the street , the more famous/ well known/ bigger / most influential naming it gets. ” He said.
The Department is also working with a committee who will be presenting the naming to the county assembly for approvals.
“This is a one of a kind project in kenya, we want to ensure that the street names can be searched via Internet and found in Google search engine.” He added.
With street coding and naming system fully functional the county will be able to eliminate loss of letters and parcels wrongly addressed, eliminate unfavourable impression to visitors if they have difficulty in finding places and ease in access to emergency cases e.g traffic accidents and fire among other benefits.
