COUNTY HOSTS MESPT ON GREEN EMPLOYMENT IN AGRICULTURE PROGRAMME

In support of the implementation of the Green Economy, The Department of Agriculture, Livestock Development and Fisheries on Wednesday hosted officials from Micro Enterprises Support Programme Trust(MESPT) to discuss the best way of rolling out The Green Employment in Agriculture Programme(GEAP) in the County.

Speaking during a workshop, Agriculture Chief Officer Julius Rotich said that the program is geared towards improving the farmer’s livelihoods.

The program has come at the right time because the criteria for selection of the MSMEs/SMEs will be done based on the capacity assessment tool, profiling tool and capacity development plans,” says Rotich.

County Director of Agriculture, Mr Reuben Seroney said that the program will enhance the impact on the farmers through financial support, training and new innovative technologies to improve productivity.

County Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Philip Biamah said that his officers at the grassroots level will carry out sensitization to ensure that the program is a success.

On his part, Jared Ochieng from MESPT added that the livelihood zoning will be based on production, consumption, markets/trade and Geography.

The programme targets to create over 3,000 green jobs in selected value chains and 40,000 farmers linked to reliable markets, therefore, achieving a percentage increase in productivity of the selected value chain by the smallholder farmers.
