MANDAGO LEADS CAMPAIGN FOR CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGH ELDO- CITY MARATHON

Every household in Uasin Gishu has been urged to plant at least 50 trees this rainy season in order to reduce the county’s forest cover deficit by a half.

“If a minimum of a hundred thousand households plants 50 trees then we shall be talking about 5 million trees being planted and in two seasons we shall have achieved the required 10 million trees”, Mandago said.

The governor was speaking Thursday during Eldoret City International Marathon Media breakfast where several organisations also presented their sponsorship cheques.

Mandago was emphasising on the clarion call by Ms Mary Njogu county executive member for Environment and Water who called on the residents to put more effort in order for Uasin Gishu to close the gap on forest cover from 7.56% to the UNEP required ten per cent forest cover.

“Climate change is here with us and we need to mitigate,” Njogu said.

The county CEO said that we do not need to wait for an environmental disaster in order to conserve our environment.

Speaking on behalf of the marathon’s media sponsor, Standard Group’s CEO Orlando Lyomu pledged full support in ensuring that the marathon achieves its definitive goal of environmental conservation.

“ We are pleased to note that over 50 thousand seedlings were planted through the efforts of last year’s Eldoret City Marathon. It is crucial that our athletes train in a good environment and this will be achieved through good forest cover” Lyomu said.

Uasin Gishu County speaker, David Kiplagat also pledged support to the marathon stating that the county assembly is ready to offer legislative and any other support required to achieve the marathon’s goal of climate change through re-afforestation of Uasin Gishu.

According to the office of the chief forest conservator North Rift valley, the region has a 40 - 70% tree seedling success rate from planting to maturity in arid and well-drained areas respectively

Mandago also spoke of the need to grow trees.

“We need to form a monitoring and evaluation committee which will follow and ensure that the tree seedlings we planted last year grow to maturity”, he said

The governor also added that his administration will construct an additional 35 kilometres of pedestrian walkways fitness with street lighting around Eldoret city in order to reduce traffic snarl up while encouraging residents to keep fit by walking into town from the various pre-urban estates.
Eldoret City Marathon whose goal is to push for environmental conservation is billed as the highest paying race with the winner pocketing 35,00 US Dollars ( 3.5 Million shillings).

For the second year running, County Government of Uasin Gishu and the standard group remain the event’s main sponsors; with the county increasing their value from ten to 15 million shillings.

The standard group offered full media coverage in addition to a Kshs 5 million cash sponsorship. Stanbic Bank and Paramount Bank offered Kshs 5 million and 3 millions sponsorship respectively. ... See MoreSee Less
