AFFORDABLE HOUSING, OUR AGENDA- Chelashaw

The Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) is an initiative by the Kenyan Government as one of the pillars under the ‘Big 4 Agenda’

In that regard, Uasin Gishu County department of Lands, Housing, Physical Planning and Urban Development is implementing the programme in several areas in the county.

The chief officer in charge of Lands and Housing, Adv. Ruth Chelashaw, during a site inspection with a team from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, says the department is looking at starting the development of several estates to provide affordable housing for the residents among them: Macharia Estate, Langas and saroyot.

As a county, we find Macharia estate, currently as the most viable, to provide affordable housing to the people of Uasin Gishu residents around West area,” said Chelashaw.

Macharia estate is in a strategic location due to its proximity to the Eldoret Central Business District, and in a neighborhood with adequate social amenities.

In phase one of the development of Macharia estate we expect to construct 350 units of two bedrooms each. The reason we are picking on this estate is because, it has good sewer systems, electricity, about three public schools around it and West hospital within the area. Such kind of structures attracts financial partners in carrying out the programme to a success” she added.

Charles Wagura, from the Ministry, commended the county government’s readiness to kick-start a project that is deemed affordable to those with a medium income.

Leah Ayako consultant in the programme implementation said their mission to inspect and assess the county’s readiness for the program was fruitful.

” With the estate currently being vacant, it is now our responsibility to find financial partners to carry out the development of the estate. We are looking at private developers, consortiums that can pull different professionals together e.g architects, engineers etc, and also we are looking at Kenyans who would want to invest in such partnerships.

The team later joined World bank consultants accompanied by the Chief officer in charge of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Kenneth Mbeka during a site inspection on KUSP projects in the county.
