As a way of reducing the pangs of drought and conserving the source of water for its residents, Uasin Gishu has set aside 1 million shillings which will be used to help in tree planting in Kaptagat forest.
On Tuesday,while marking the tree planting day in Kaptagat forest, Deputy Governor Hon Daniel Chemno reiterated the County’s commitment in conserving the environment, saying that as a county they are going to hold regular tree planting excercise across the county.
Speaking during the event, Principal Secretary in charge of state department of natural resources Dr. Margaret Mwakima lauded the annual initiative, noting the efforts put in by the stakeholders involved in conserving the environment.
“As a department we have made steps in conserving the environment as we have already improved the forest cover from 6.8 p.c to 7.4 p.c and we intend to hit the 10 p.c target”, noted Dr. Mwakima
Giving his adress, Elgeyo Marakwet Governor H.E Eng. Alex Tolgos appreciated the support given by the state Department of Environment, noting the steps both Elgeyo Marakwet and Uasin Gishu have taken to boost forest cover in Kaptagat forest.
The event that saw planting of more than 10,000 trees in Kaptagat forest also involved a race, which was aimed at mobilizing the people on the importance of forest conservation and tree planting.
Also in attendance were Dr. Chris Kiptoo Ps in charge of trade, Dr. Dinah Mwinzi PS in charge of vocational training, Dr. Fred Segor PS in charge of state department of Environment, Mary Njogu CEC, Environment and other Government officials.
