Youths under 24 years mostly affected by HIV/AIDs, says Chemno

img-20161201-wa0007The County Government of Uasin Gishu on Thursday joined the world in commemorating the World Aids Day.

Word aids Day is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV,show the respect support for the people living with HIV as well as commemorate those who have died.

According to Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor H.E Daniel Chemno, youth under the age of 24 years which consists 60% of Kenya population are mostly affected by HIV/AIDs.

“It pains me to mention that the future of our nation is at risk because more than half of new HIV infections occur among adolescents and young people” he said

Speaking during the event Chemno said the county government is committed in the fight against stigma of people living with HIV/AIDs

“We help in the fight against HIV/AIDs stigma through the stewardship of the National AIDs  Control Council, County Government through the department of sports will help influence conversations about HIV /AIDs among young people”he added

The County Executive in charge of health services Ms Margaret Chepkwony called on the infected people to see that they help in  creating awareness to those who are not infected.

“We should not stigmatize those living with HIV since everyone can get the virus and if you are not infected you are affected in one way or the other”claimed Chepkwony

Uasin Gishu county launched its ‘Uasin Gishu County  HIV/AIDs Strategic Plan 2015/16-2019/2020’ which targets at lowering the spread of the HIV by 70% come 2019.
